Add a dash of romance and a sprinkle of love to your holiday season with Jou Romeo – the perfect summer film that the whole family will enjoy.

The film opens at cinemas nationwide on December 23.

Marko Marais (Ruan Wessels) is the most popular guy at school – not only is he a jock, but also a cricket star and heartthrob. He and the beautiful drama geek, Yvette (Elani Dekker), are worlds apart, but true love prevails in this story about romance, Shakespeare, cricket, friendship and unconditional acceptance.

When Yvette and her best friend Tyler (Christopher van der Westhuizen) decide to stage Romeo and Juliet for their matric year – a goal they’ve had since eighth grade – their plans are jeopardised by the sports-mad principal, Mister Kirby Potgieter (Pierre Breytenbach), who cuts the arts and culture budget. Without financial support from the school, Yvette and Tyler make a plan to sell enough tickets to stage their play.

Yvette decides to call on Marko’s help. But she doesn’t have Marko’s best interests at heart. She later realises that there is more to him than just being a jock with a charming smile and loads of fans. Suddenly Marko also starts seeing the fiery redhead from a different perspective.

Does it mean that Marko is Yvette’s real-life Romeo and she his Juliet?

Diaan Lawrence, Dirk Stoltz, Row-Lean, Sarahann Doherty and Carmin Coetzer also feature in Jou Romeo. The film explores interesting themes about belonging, recognising the value of others and the ability to see unusual qualities in others.

Jou Romeo was produced by The Film Factory and is released by Ster-Kinekor Entertainment.
