Nine Bundesliga matches per weekend

StarSat will broadcast live the weekends Bundesliga on its' sport channels.

THE German Bundesliga is considered to be one of the top football leagues in the world and over the years, many leading players have made their way to play in this league.

StarSat will broadcast the Bundesliga this weekend live on their sports channel, which is exclusive in HD quality. Apart from the Bundesliga, StarSat will also broadcast Italy’s Serie A and the Ligue 1 on their sport channels.

The Bundesliga was founded in 1962 in Dortmund while the league only commenced the year after. Many changes to the league took place over the years up until 2016 – it was originally founded by the German Football Association, but is now operated by the German Football League.

Altogether, a total of 18 teams contest the premier league, but since its inception 54 clubs have competed in the Bundesliga. The matches are mainly played on Saturdays and Sundays and it’s the league with the highest average stadium attendance worldwide. The winner of the Bundesliga qualifies for the DFL-Supercup.

Bayern Munich Football Club has won it a whopping 25 times. The other teams who historically have contested for the title successfully are: Borussia Dortmund, Hamburger SV, Werder Bremen, Borussia Mönchengladbach and VfB Stuttgart.

The Bundesliga is currently ranked second in Europe according to UEFA’s league co-efficient ranking, based on performances in European competitions over the past five seasons. The current Bundesliga campaign commenced in August 2016 and will end in May 2017 – it’s contested on a promotion and relegation league system.

For the 2016/2017 season, VfB Stuttgart and Hannover 96 were relegated to the second league. It’s the first time former champions Stuttgart have been relegated to the second level in 39 years, whereas Hannover 96 had a 14-years stint at the top level before their drop. They were replaced by the second-level Bundesliga champions SC Freiburg and the runners-up RB Leipzig. It was an immediate return to the Bundesliga after a year out, for Freiburg; whereas RB Leipzig are making their debut – they’re the first team from the former East Germany to play in the Bundesliga, since the relegation of Energie Cottbus after the 2008/2009 season.
