Trapped by fallen tree

Kobus Geldenhuys and his family were forced to stay in their premises

FOLLOWING the heavy winds and rains experienced recently, one unlucky family was sadly trapped in their abode in South Crest after a large tree was uprooted and crashed over their gate and driveway, on Friday night, November 11.

Kobus Geldenhuys and his family were forced to stay at their home in Jan Meyer Street for the duration of the Saturday, after both the tree and phone lines fell earthwards on to their gate, driveway and bakkie – which was parked on the driveway.

Geldenhuys spoke to the CHRONICLE explaining that he did call his insurance company; who said they’d come out and assess his bakkie once the tree was removed. At the time the tree collapsed, the family contacted the municipality and were waiting for them to remove it. He also spoke of how his shade net was blown into the air and back to the floor, because of the extreme weather conditions.

“Luckily I had just parked my car and got into the house, when everything happened and then I saw the shade net being lifted by the winds. My neighbour then called to tell me that the tree was hanging skew – by then, it was too late and it had already fallen over. Now we’re stuck and can’t go in or out of our premises, with any vehicles,” he said.

The tree has been removed and no-one was injured.
