A crime blitz for the South

Main concerns when it came to crime included hijacked buildings, where buildings or houses were taken over illegally by persons who do not own the buildings.

RECENTLY Member of Parliament for Johannesburg South, Manny de Freitas MP, ward 56 Councillor Michael Crichton and PR Councillor for ward 124, Tyrell Meyers joined the SAPS, the JMPD and the City Health Department on a crime blitz.

This surprise blitz took place in various suburbs throughout the South.

Main concerns when it came to crime included hijacked buildings, where buildings or houses were taken over illegally by persons who do not own the buildings.

“When visiting houses we identified as hijacked, we found other criminal activities taking place there, mainly drug dealing and consumption as well as prostitution,” explained de Freitas. He further explained that most of the people involved were foreigners, some who were illegally in South Africa whilst others had asylum status.

Other illegal activities that were addressed that evening included prostitution that took place on the streets in full view for all to see, as well as drug dealing.

“Because of the desperate situation that these people are in, they have resorted to criminal activities in order to survive. This brings up other social issues that need to be addressed by government,” he said.

Manny de Freitas said that although this problem is a mammoth one, he and his team are determined to deal with each issue, one at a time. “Eventually one will start seeing positive results if we consistently keep fighting crime in whatever way possible,” he said.

De Freitas concluded that more surprise crime blitzes will be taking place on a regular basis in future.
