Sages Golf Tournament at Reading Country Club

Reading Country Club in Alberton hosted a seniors golf tournament recently.

READING Country Club, in Alberton, hosted a seniors’ golf tournament on Monday and Tuesday, September 12 and 13.

Sages Senior Golfers, from the northern region, played an enjoyable round of golf at Reading, hosted by the South Rand Sages branch.

A total of 136 players took part over the two days, representing 14 branches countrywide, including three from the Free State, six from Gauteng, two from Far Northern, two from Mpumalanga and one from the North West.

The oldest player in the tournament was 91-year-old Dolf Brits, from Bela-Bela (formerly Warmbaths).

Good spirits reigned at the competition, and the Vaal branch finished as the overall winners. The team members, Dion van Rooyen, Petra van der Merwe, Butch Lombard and Colin Clifford, earned a better ball score of 181 points over the two days, to take the victory.

Monday’s best better ball score was chalked up by Eurica Gowans and Aubrey Myburgh, while Tuesday saw Peet Strydom and Sydney Majake come out on top.

The individual competition, on Monday, was won by old-Albertonian Hannes le Roux and Butch Lombard.

Sages Senior Golfers, or Sages for short, is a golfing society for senior golfers and members of golf clubs who have reached the age of 50 are eligible to join their nearest branch.

Branches arrange tournaments at different golf clubs within their areas one or more times per month. Sages enjoy the opportunity of fellowship with other senior golfers, and the opportunity to play at different courses all over the country.

Sages started in 1974, as a result of an increasing demand from senior golfers who felt the need for an organisation that would meet their requirements.

The first branch, Rand Central (now called Jimmy Gowans branch), was formed in 1974, under the chairmanship of founder member Jimmy Gowans.

The other branches followed in quick succession, with the first Sages National Champion being crowned in 1978.

By 2012 there were 29 branches with a total of about 3 000 members.
