Metrobus resumes services

Metrobus, which had suspended services on 229 routes, said services would resume today.

A settlement has been reached on Tuesday, July 12 with striking drivers to end the three-day work stoppage. Metrobus, which had suspended services on 229 routes, said services would resume today.

Esther Dreyer from the Metrobus communications department said, “Bus drivers reported for work this morning and buses are operating at all three depots. At this stage we are approximately 90 per cent operational and by this afternoon or tomorrow it will be 100 per cent.” Bus drivers went on strike on Friday over the engagement of a private company to supervise them and to check if passengers on their buses had tickets.

Metrobus drivers were up in arms because they said having an outside company do the inspections limited their careers as they also aspired to be inspectors. The SA Municipal Workers’ Union agreed to Metrobus’ offer to train drivers to become inspectors. They have agreed to work alongside officials from the outside company. Metrobus transports more than 90 000 people a day.
