No stopping crime in the South

“In all my years of being involved with the CPF I’ve never known so many break-ins and attempts on one day. It’s quite frightening what’s taking place!” Pelser added.

“LAST week, in Mondeor Sector Two, five crime incidents were reported to the Mondeor Police Station,” said Michelle Pelser, of the Mondeor Sector Two Community Policing Forum.

On Tuesday, March 15, in Davina Street, Ridgeway, two males arrived at a home and said they were there to measure up for the bathroom. The domestic worker let them in and they stole property.

On the same day, in Beauval Avenue, Mondeor, and Swallow Street, Meredale, two men attempted to gain entry to the properties and, in Cilliers Street, Suideroord, six women went to a house which is for sale and asked the domestic worker to let them in so they could view the property. The six women stole electrical goods.

Another attempt was made to enter a property in Potgieter Street, Suideroord, but the three women and one man were unsuccessful.

“In all my years of being involved with the CPF I’ve never known so many break-ins and attempts on one day. It’s quite frightening what’s taking place!” Pelser said.

According to her, there seems to be a trend in which criminals target domestic workers looking after their employers’ homes and senior citizens.

“What I don’t understand is how relaxed home owners are about leaving their domestic workers to take care of their homes, which often cost more than R2-million, and to leave their children in their care, either all day or after school,” she added.

”Many domestics haven’t a clue how to even make contact with their employers, what the street address is and certainly have no concept of how to keep criminals at bay.

“Every month various areas in Johannesburg South hold Domestic Watch Crime Prevention lessons which can only assist domestic workers to learn how to handle certain situations.”
