ON Saturday evening, January 23, at about 19:50, a huge tree fell over from the central island across Comaro Street, Bassonia, blocking the road.
Calls came through to Mondeor Sector 1 CPF and a team immediately arrived on the scene to assess the damage. JMPD and City Parks were contacted but, because of the storm and heavy rain, no-one was available to come out to assist. One of the members had a chainsaw and others had 4×4 vehicles. An urgent request was then sent out to the community via Face Book and community members came forward with more chainsaws.
Comaro Street was closed off by the CPF members at the top by Pieter Acroyd Avenue, Bassonia, while they worked tirelessly cutting up and removing the tree to the side of the pavement.
“The guys worked from 20:00 until around 12:30 so they could clear the road, which was opened up at just after midnight,” said Mike Fontes, Mondeor Sector 1 CPF member.
