Woman almost burns in Glenvista house fire

Panic striken: A woman's frantic calls for help get her saved from a burning house

GLENVISTA – The life of a woman was saved by the quick response of City Power maintenance workers at a site on Vista Drive and Charmion Avenue. She was locked inside her burning Glenvista property.

A woman screaming for help prompted Vusi Zwane, Dick Kunene, Musa Mtungwa and Elias to rush to the house, which almost burnt to the ground.

“We were busy working when we heard a woman’s voice yelling: ‘Help me, please help me!’. We ran to the house, but the gate was locked and she couldn’t get out. We reached in and managed to unlock the gate and the woman escaped. Then we removed some of the stuff we could carry,” explained Dick Kunene.

It was later discovered that the woman screaming for help was the owner of the home and her husband had gone out.

The men carried out motor bikes and furniture and they quickly warned the woman to remove her vehicle from the property before it was damaged by the roaring fire.

The Kibler Park Fire department arrived in a matter of minutes and the Glenvista CPF also responded swiftly to the scene to assist.

Kibler Park Fire Department Station Commander, Allan Barker explained: “We received a call at about 13:30 for a house burning in Vista Drive in Glenvista. On our arrival we found the whole top floor of the double-storey house was alight, and we then started firefighting operations. There were no injuries reported. The owners of the house are here. We have two firefighting engines and ten fire fighters in attendance.”

Half of the top floor was damaged, although some electrical appliances were salvaged by the firefighters. The cause of the fire is still unknown. The owner of the house said that he believed the fire was started after Eskom returned power, which may have set one of the appliances alight.
