River side gets a clean-up

Miss Earth South Africa semi-finalists, Generation Earth students, family, friends and local residents came out in force on Saturday morning May 24 to clean up the Bloubos valley and spruit area which borders on Riverside Drive and Bellefield Avenue, Mondeor.

MONDEOR – Ella Bella Constantinides said she was thrilled with the turn-out. “It’s wonderful to see so many people here today joining us in cutting back the wattles and vegetation by the spruit. It’s become very overgrown and as well as partially blocking the spruit it draws the wrong elements during the evening and residents have been complaining about the increase in crime in this area. As well as everyone who has come out to help us, I’d also like to thank Joburg City Parks for partnering with us in this project,” she said.

“We are having a great time here today,” said, Nazrana Hogaith, Azaiah Son and Raihaanah Hogaith (front). Back: Galen Son, Sergio Dos Santos and Margaret Roos.

Ward 54 councillor, Sergio Dos Santos, was hard at work cutting back wattles and said, “This is an ongoing problem which needs to be addressed frequently, otherwise the trees and vegetation will be overgrown again in a few months. It’s great seeing all these young ones here assisting with this worthwhile project.”
