Glenvista winner of The Cake Challenge
Young and talented, Cristofer Lanzetti from Glenvista, has won the Best Overall Cake and Best Decorated Cake in the novice category of The Cake Challenge, held at the Wedding Expo at the Dome over the weekend April 5 and 6.
GLENVISTA – Cristofer (21) has always had a love for food and cooking, and often he’d bake with his mom, whipping up a cake or two. He attended Glenvista High School and received an award in art for three years. One of his subjects was consumer studies, gaining him the highest marks for his lemon meringue pie and mini doughnuts, which won him an award in matric. Putting his creativeness and love for baking together, he was a winner!
A four month internship in Italy and Europe followed, working with a pastry chef which gave him some valuable experience but when he returned to SA he knew in his heart he wanted to bake cakes.
Deon Swartz of the Cake Genie, offered Cristofer an internship and he learnt the basics of specialised baking and icing and it wasn’t long before he was baking his own cakes for the shop. “The internship was for three months but I stayed a year and just loved working with the team. While I was there I developed my own techniques and realised I wanted to venture out on my own,” Cristofer said.
The Red Velvetier, Cristofer’s own business, has taken off with a bang and his cakes are really something to see. He bakes special occasion, novelty, corporate, birthday and wedding cakes, with plastic icing being his speciality. “I’m a sugar artist and make all my own decorations for my cakes. Some can take hours to master but being a perfectionist, I work until I’m absolutely satisfied with what I’ve created,” he said.

Congratulations on winning Cristofer! Having ordered numerous cakes from him for myself and most of my family, I can most definitely say that his work is the best I have ever seen! His use of beautiful techniques, out of the box designs and ideas, attention to detail and superb customer service makes him a leader in the South African cake designing industry. But of course his accolades will speak of his abilities; the best in South Africa, a title well deserved!
