History and character of the South and KNR

The Southern Suburbs of Johannesburg has a long and unique character, often reviled by ‘outsiders’, but cherished by locals.

KIBLER PARK – It stems from the unique breed of people, spectacular open spaces and a history that has worked itself into the very grain of the community, often without residents realising it. Some of this history is for all to see, but a lot of that is behind the scenes, some forgotten, some lost with the passing of old-timers and some literally crumbling with the passage of time. Calvin Montgomery, a young gentleman born and bred in the South, has taken it upon himself to do something about this tragedy.

He founded the Southern Suburbs Heritage Society and has been co-opted onto the executive committee of the KNRA. At last there is a champion for the Reserves heritage cause! Together challenges will be taken on with the Sarel Marais farmstead, Sotho-Tswana heritage, the Vierfontein dam and many more.

Calvin has kindly agreed to share with his vision for the historical preservation and utilisation of the South generally and the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve specifically. Join for this talk on Thursday March 20.  It is yet another watershed moment and you will regret it, if you miss it.

The talk will take place at JCPZ Entrance Precinct, Peggy Vera Road, Kibler Park at 19:00 at a cost of R50 per person. Tea, coffee and snacks will be served after the talk. Booking for this event is essential and can be done by e-mailing leabrash@kolisa.co.za
