Burst water pipes saga continues

Collecting bits of information from site workers, neighbours and basically anyone who knows enough to shed some light on the council’s contingency plans, is what some Glenvista residents have resorted to.

“There’s no information from the council saying ‘here’s what is going to be happening’, we wouldn’t know if we didn’t go out and seek the info ourselves,” said a concerned home owner Janene Hardley who’s had an open construction hole outside her home for at least two weeks.

On July 5, Comaro CHRONICLE reported that a contractor had been appointed by Head Office to replace most of the water mains in Glenvista, as indicated by Johannesburg Water manager, Patrick Mathye. “We have since been given a commitment that this is in a final stage, since the contractor has started in some of the areas.”

Mr Mathye’s response came after Glenanda resident Bruno Isler took it upon himself to go to Johannesburg water offices to find out exactly what the council would be doing to deal with the continuous bursting water pipes on Ferox Drive, Vista Drive and Angelica. He, however, could not confirm the dates of the scheduled plan of action.

Ashogun, who also has a home on Ferox Drive says that he is still waiting for the council to come out to attend to the burst pipes that have sent a flood of water rushing into his home and yard, destroying his garden, pool and even the wooden floors in some of the bedrooms.

“We’ve had about eight burst pipes in a 200 metre radius and when you call them to report, they wait for a shift change before switching off the water.”

As early as 04:00 in the morning, residents are awoken by water streaming down the road and into some homes on Ferox.

“Generally when they’re here they get the job done, but I find that there’s always an open hole or something that they have to come and complete,” added Janene.

Two open holes can be found on Vista Drive with one of them near Van Beek Street and another hole corner Ferox Drive and Vista Drive.

Clr Paul Smit revealed that the first phase of replacements has been completed and has laready begun on the next phase of the project.
