Violence in children is a growing problem

Whatever causes violence among youngsters, I don’t see it becoming any better soon.

I’m sure most of you will have heard about the shocking murder of a Mondeor High School learner who was killed by three boys, ages 13 and 15, last week. I arrived at the scene not long after the poor boy had been declared dead and it was heart-wrenching.

And what was he killed for? A cellphone!

It is horrifying to think many of the children of today are becoming more and more violent. I just can’t comprehend how a young child can kill another human being. Who or what is to blame? I personally think TV can cause children to be violent. Even in some ‘children’s programmes’ violence is seen as funny. Children are becoming desensitised towards violence.

Violence in homes is prevalent and if children see their parents fighting physically, they will more times than not grow up thinking it is the norm for adults to behave in this way.

Whatever causes violence among youngsters, I don’t see it becoming any better soon. God help us.
