Hawwaam sweeps in to win Classic Day

Gavin Lerena and Hawwaam returned to winning ways.

GAVIN Lerena returned to winning ways as he and Hawwaam proved their worth by winning the second leg of the Triple Crown, Classic Day.

Classic Day was held at Turffontein Racecourse on March 2 which marked the second leg of the Triple Crown and Triple Tiara races.

Hawwaam came back to beat Gauteng Guineas winner National Park and stablemate Barahin by 5.75 lengths raking in the R2-million race.

A relieved Lerena said to his trainer, Mathew de Kock, “Thank you for keeping me on this horse.”

De Kock said that he was satisfied with the outcome of the race and for relying on Lerena. He said, “Chaos. It’s never easy to watch these races.”

Return Flight with jockey, Anton Marcus, won the R1.25-m Wilgerbosdrift SA Fillies Classic, Triple Tiara, with trainer, Sean Tarry, who led all the way to beat Fillies Guineas winner Nafaayes 0.80 lengths and Blossom finishing third.

The third and final leg of the Triple Crown and Triple Tiara will take place on March 30 at Turffontein Racecourse.
