Open house in Glenanda

A person can't just set up home on parkland.

A GLENANDA North resident who has lived in Amanda Avenue for close on 50 years is concerned about a man who has moved into the park in Amanda Avenue where the bridge crosses over the N12 highway from Glenanda South.

“I have noticed this man has begun to build a tent-like structure at the side of a tree and seems to be moving more objects there. He is living here and what scares me is first there’s one person and the next week there’s 10 and so it will get worse,” she said. “He hangs his washing on trees and I’m worried to even think where he washes and goes to the toilet.”

“He obviously collects plastic bottles and containers and sorts them out here too. I have contacted the ward councillor, Michael Crichton but he doesn’t seem concerned at all.

“This shouldn’t be tolerated. A person can’t just set up home on parkland. Just think how this could escalate to a squatter camp. This is supposed to be a well-tended suburb,” the woman added.

Ward 56 councillor Crichton commented: “I am most concerned about this misplaced person who is now residing under the bridge in the park. I have been in touch with the Moffat View SAPS regarding having him removed.

However, they don’t know where to place him once he is removed. This is a challenge we are having with dealing with misplaced people across the city. I am now in touch with the social development to assist with having him relocated.”
