UPDATE: Bassonia man recovers after being shot

"It was all recorded on our CCTV camera. What is absolutely unbelievable is the whole crime took place within 29 seconds."

A BASSONIA resident who was shot on January 17 outside his home in Bassonia is recovering at home after being discharged from hospital on January 21.

The Comaro CHRONICLE spoke to the resident and his friend. He said they had been shopping at a centre in Bedfordview, left and drove home, taking the Comaro Street off-ramp.

“My friend was driving and neither of us noticed anything suspicious or anyone following us home. Just as we turned into our driveway a car raced in behind us, stopping our automatic gate from closing. Three men jumped out, one man told my friend to hand over the keys to the car, while two men came to my passenger door and began to try and pull me out, screaming ‘Give us the watch, give us the watch’.

“As soon as the men came through the gate I immediately began to hoot, over and over again. Almost immediately one of our neighbour’s saw what was happening and was screaming for help,” said the woman. “The man smashed my side window and glass cut my arm and shoulder while I was still in the driver’s seat,” she said.

“They kept hitting me with a mallet on both my knees and legs and I handed over the watch,” said the victim.

A shot was fired and went into the victim’s calf, exiting the other side while he was still in the car. The robbers left as swiftly as they had arrived at the house, taking the watch and driving off in their vehicle, a silver VW Polo sedan, registration FN3 5DX GP.

Help arrives

The victim emerged from the car, bleeding heavily, and neighbours came from across the road and next door to offer assistance.

“One of our neighbour’s put her finger into the bullet hole to try and stop the blood until the paramedics arrived,” he said.

Four EMS vehicles arrived on the scene as well as D&D Security members and Mulbarton CPF. Mondeor SAPS arrived afterwards and took a statement from the woman while the victim was transported to Netcare Union Hospital, Alberton, where he was stabilised and underwent surgery on Friday morning.

The woman went to casualty after giving her statement, where she was X-rayed and examined. She was discharged the same day.

“It was all recorded on our CCTV camera. What is absolutely unbelievable is the whole crime took place within 29 seconds,” the man and woman said. “We honestly don’t think we could have been any more cautious or aware than we were. It’s sickening to think how crime in this country is escalating. Thank you to all our neighbours who came to our aid, EMS teams, and the others who came to our assistance.”
