Mpact Recycling mascot and Tammy Taylor visits Waterstone College

By recycling, it diverts recyclable paper, paper based packaging and plastic away from landfills; reduces greenhouse gas emissions and prevents the incineration of recyclable paper.

WATERSTONE College received a special visit from Ronnie Recycler (Mpact Recycling mascot), Yasmeen Adam (procurement representative from Mpact Recycling) and Tandi Potgieter (Tammy Taylor Mrs South Africa finalist) on October 22.

Through the partnership with Mpact Recycling, the Top 25 Mrs South Africa finalists are required to work alongside Mpact Recycling at schools and communities with the aim of promoting recycling awareness, supporting fund-raising initiatives and increasing recycling volumes.

Each finalist has a target to generate two tons of recycling at the schools and communities they visit. The Ronnie Recycler programme allows schools and communities to raise funds, as they are paid for their recyclables while teaching environmental awareness, responsibility and sustainability.

The partnership is valuable as it spotlights the importance of recycling. By recycling, you benefit the environment in a number of ways: it diverts recyclable paper, paper-based packaging and plastic away from landfills; reduces greenhouse gas emissions and prevents the incineration of recyclable paper.

“Waterstone College has been a part of my family’s life for almost nine years. It was an incredibly moving moment for me to be able to share with the Waterstone children my passion for community and get them excited about paper recycling with Mpact Recycling,” said Tandi passionately.

“Ronnie Recycler was a huge hit and it was a fun way to raise awareness about paper recycling. I was so overwhelmed by the fantastic response. The collection of paper recycling for the event by the primary school and the Curro Castle surpassed our greatest expectations. I look forward to working with Waterstone College and Mpact Recycling in the new year to put sustainable measures in place to continue this important initiative at the school.”

Did you know that long-life milk and juice cartons are now recyclable? Recycling your used, empty cartons is easy and only requires you to remove or lift the cap, turn out the corners, flatten and replace the cap. The flattened carton is now ready to be recycled in your nearest Ronnie Bank.

Waterstone College would like to encourage more community members and businesses to play their part in saving the environment by donating all their unwanted paper, magazines, newspapers, cartons, among others, to the school for recycling. A total of 1 387 learners were impacted on the day.
