Giving back to their community

Walking Tall with Pride is an initiative built from an idea to provide destitute people with a hot meal once a week and some life essentials such as clothing and groceries.

OVER 170 people gathered in a hall at Southern Suburbs Sport and Recreation Centre where Walking Tall with Pride organisation gave them a cooked meal, a fruit and a dessert on October 24.

One of the organisers, Jeff Ellis, said as ex-boxers they give food every Wednesday at the centre for the destitute and needy community of the South.

“We started in February last year and we have given over 10 000 meals thanks to the generous sponsors and individuals who helped us. Besides giving food we also organised jobs for some where we can. We also give the surplus of food to Moffat View Old Age Home,” he said.

Walking Tall with Pride is an initiative built from an idea to provide destitute people with a hot meal once a week and some life essentials such as clothing and groceries. The organisation endeavours to encourage these people by assisting them to take pride in their environment and also assist them with work. This is a registered NGO and all monies or time donated will be used for its main objective. The feeding takes place at the Southern Suburbs Sport and Recreation Centre between 12noon and 1pm every Wednesday.

The team behind Walking Tall with Pride comprises of Jeff and Marie Ellis, Nick and Janice Lourens and Anton Gilmore. While each has their own life story and journey of gratitude, the common ground for all is the ability to give back through boxing. A more humble, dedicated and passionate group of people will be hard to find. Through both their individual and collective networks they look to bring some joy into the lives of those who have very little.

Walking Tall with Pride represents not only pride and dignity, which they look to instil in each of the beneficiaries’ lives, but a sense of worth, belonging and hope for a better tomorrow.

They would welcome any assistance through donations paid into their bank account or donations of clothing and or groceries.
