A high calibre of boxing was maintained throughout the Boxing 5 tournament, which boasted a full bill of 10 bouts on June 30 at the Turffontein Racecourse.

THE heart of boxing was always in the Southern Suburbs and, delightfully enough, it has returned, with the presentation of various events over the past few months.

A high calibre of boxing was maintained throughout the Boxing 5 tournament, which boasted a full bill of 10 bouts on June 30 at the Turffontein Racecourse.

Promoters Tumelo Matsose and Lebo Mosiliki, in conjunction with Boxing 5, Larry Wainstein and tournament organiser Manny Fernandes, combined a well-balanced bout list for the afternoon’s proceedings, and spectators enjoyed some good boxing.

The main bout saw Ladumo Lamati taking control of the fight from round one against his Tanzanian opponent Saidi Chimo in an international featherweight bout over 10 rounds.

Lamati, the International Boxing Federation (IBF) junior-featherweight champion and African Boxing Union (ABU) and South African title-holder, overshadowed his counterpart, picking out his punches to win by TKO in the sixth round.

He fought out of Rocky’s Gymnasium, recording his 15th win, which included 10 KOs and one draw.

The women’s bout was definitely the fight of the day when two well-trained boxers in the ring displayed their skills to the fullest. Ellen Simwaka from Rocky’s Gymnasium meant business when she outclassed Simangele Hadebe and clinched the Women’s Boxing Federation (WBF) bantamweight belt. She won by TKO in the seventh round, 1.32 seconds, over 10 rounds.

In the undercard of the afternoon, Erick Mukadi won his middleweight bout by TKO in the seventh round, 2.11 seconds, against John Bopape in an eight-rounder.
