Nova Pioneer schools: Running to make a difference

The marathon initiative will also inspire our learners and know that no matter what, they can achieve anything they set their minds to.

NOVA Pioneer schools are preparing for their K4TK fund-raising initiative to benefit learners through the organisation’s scholarship and innovation funds across its schools in South Africa and Kenya.

It goes without saying that Nova Pioneer in Ormonde can’t wait to get the word out there and to get the ball rolling.

The idea was birthed last year after the success of the Kilimanjaro 4 The Kids (K4TK) initiative which saw 13 teachers from the Nova Pioneer group climb the highest mountain in Africa and raised R400 000 through different fund-raising activities.

Now it is time to prepare for the Soweto Marathon for this year’s project, Kilometres 4 The Kids (K4TK).

“This year we want to make sure we are more involved and we are preparing for the Soweto Marathon in November. Nova Pioneer has five schools in South Africa and these will take part in the Soweto Marathon while our three schools in Kenya will participate in the Nairobi Marathon to take place on November 4 and October 29 respectively,” the CEO of Nova Pioneer Education Group, Chinezi Chijioke, said.

“We currently have 100 people already signed up for either the Soweto or Nairobi Marathon and that’s quite a substantial number of people, including parents, teachers and learners above 16 years of age.”

Same as last year, funds raised this year will go towards the Innovation Fund used to support learners to take their innovations into the ‘real world’, as well as a Scholarship Fund used to enable talented learners who could otherwise not afford to attend Nova Pioneer.

“We are schools greatly grounded in culture and our work centres on the rights to have an impact beyond our walls because we see ourselves as part of the broader centre,” Chijioke said. He further explained that learners at Nova Pioneer are prepared to think, act, and be active participants in their world and they are empowered to explore their interests and talents.

“It is also important to note that most of these initiatives are also meant to inspire our learners and know that no matter what, they can achieve anything they set their minds to,” said Nuhaa Ismail, a Grade Two teacher.

She said a number of families had also signed up to participate in the project with one example of a family that signed in their Grade 11 child together with them for the marathon event in Soweto.

“We do have a few extra spots for the general public who may want to participate in the marathon but they have to follow the necessary registration procedures in order to participate in the marathon,” Nuhaa added.
