Champion golfers at Reading

Ladies champion successfully defends her title while new men's champion emerges.

READING Country Club’s annual golf championships held recently, saw lady captain Shelley Daymond successfully defending her title, while 21-year-old Hein Dreyer emerged as the new men’s champion.

For both, the victories didn’t come easily.

“We had a very strong field this year,” said Shelley, currently playing off an 11-handicap.

“The level of golf that our lady members are playing has strengthened dramatically. Where in previous years the Silver Division, handicaps 0-18, struggled to attract even as many as four players, this year saw a record 10 ladies competing in this division,” Shelley explained.

Hein had to fight off a strong field including last year’s winner, Johan van Rooyen, to emerge as the club champion. Playing off a +3 handicap, this young man shot a 145 gross over the two days in his first ever championships at Reading. Hein was a member of Glendower Country Club before moving back to Reading.

“I stay in Alberton; it makes sense to play my golf at Reading,” he said.

Hein has his sights firmly set on becoming a professional golfer. He started playing golf at the age of 14 and is currently being coached by the great Gavan Levenson.

Hein and Shelley both agree that, for them, there is just no greater sport and challenge than the game of golf. For Hein, it is in the “feeling to know that you are in the middle of a battle”, while for Shelley it’s not just about playing golf, “but being part of this amazing club and promoting ladies golf and membership at the club.”

They both wish to thank their families and friends for the support and encouragement and “a special word of thanks to our competitors, without whom we would never be able to push ourselves to reach the goals we’ve set,” the new champions added.
