It has been reported that thieves are calling victims of car theft claiming they are the police and saying they have found their stolen vehicle. The SAPS is not certain how the suspects get the victims’ information and details.
“The criminals tell the victims that their vehicle has been recovered in a different town and they request the owner to pay a sum of money via e-wallet to get the vehicle back,” said Mondeor SAPS spokesperson Captain Nokulunga Dube.
The police are urging the community to immediately contact their investigating officer dealing with the case should they receive such a call.
“People should not fall victim to these scams. The duty of the police is to put a stop to crime and find the stolen vehicles. Once the vehicle is found, and after further investigations, the vehicle is returned to the lawful owner without any remuneration,” concluded Dube.
