A growing idea

"Last year I attended a course, Foundation for Farming, which was excellent with great growing tips."

A MARKET is a market, but this is a boeremark, which is held every Saturday morning at Rietvlei Zoo Farm from 7am to 12pm and it’s been running since November last year.

Co-ordinator of the boeremark, Charlene Moutinho, wanted to give something back to the community, so this was the first idea she thought of to assist those who wish to sell fresh produce, including eggs, cheese, chickens and vegetables as well as home-baked goods and some arts and crafts.

“It seems to be taking off quite well and this year I’m sure we’ll be having more stall holders with local entrepreneurs coming on board too. A stall will cost you R150 each Saturday and you are welcome to bring chairs and a gazebo or shading to keep your stall from the sun,” said Charlene.

Taking giving back to the community further, Charlene has begun her vegetable and salad tunnels at the farm and has two others working with her who are keen to train community members in how to grow their own produce.

“Last year I attended a course, Foundation for Farming, which was excellent with great growing tips. Once we have our veggie tunnels completely operational, the produce will be used to feed Rietvlei’s staff members and the two trainers will begin training passionate community members.

“With the good rains we’ve recently experienced, the veggie tunnels are growing nicely and our first peas, beans and spinach will soon be ready to pick. Exciting times ahead for us,” added Charlene.
