Conversation with a stranger: Crafting the creativity out of children

Carey-Ann has done many events throughout the years, such as birthday parties, and her biggest event was her own wedding in March 2017.

THE Crafting Bug is a new extramural activity run by 28-year-old Carey-Ann Duvenage, who is also an educator at The Owl House Pre-School in Suideroord.

The Verwoerdpark resident spoke of how she has a passion for crafting and event planning.

She shared some of her accolades with us.

BEAUTIFUL: A beautiful cushion.

In matric Carey took home trophies and awards for perseverance, best editor of the school newspaper, highest number of hours worked at the school hotel and also a managing award.

“Although I love teaching, since I was 16-years-old I knew crafting and events planning were my passion,” said the artist.

It was only last year that she decided to start the Crafting Bug to teach children different art and craft techniques as an extramural activity.

ANCHOR: Anchors made for a couple.

Carey has done many events throughout the years, such as birthday parties, and her biggest event was her own wedding in March 2017.

“For my wedding, I did absolutely everything!

BABY: Baby James’ little hamper.

“From the décor and flower arrangements to the gifts and invites, I planned it all and even executed it, not forgetting my own wedding dress of course,” she said.

Carey is now working towards her qualification in event planning to be able to expand on that side of her passion.

She also plans on expanding the Crafting Bug to other surrounding schools.

PAINTING: A beautiful painting for a couple.

She has taught at schools in Alberton and Boksburg for over three years and has been at The Owl House for six months now.

“I enjoy bringing out the creative side of people and I want to help children express their feelings through what they create,” explained Carey.

LIBRARY: One of the paintings that Carey is busy with at a school library.

Outsourcing the cakes for events from her mom, who is an established baker in Verwoerdpark, Carey feels that no project is too big or too small.
