Illegal dumping a problem in Ward 125

The illegal dumping by contractors around the Nasrec precinct on properties owned by national government is out of control.

COUNCILLORS are inundated with calls from residents regarding illegal dumping in the open spaces around the suburbs.

Despite a dedicated helpline being advertised to report illegal dumping, the public still ignores the reporting of such until an area is so overcrowded with illegal dumping that they blame the authorities for not doing anything about it.

Ward 125 Clr Peter Stewart has recently taken it upon himself to drive around the ward and identified would be dumpers and to his amazement found that all cases where dumping took place were residents from Ward 125 or contractors employed by them that are dumping in the area.

In Byvanger Street, Meredale it was found that gardeners from the area push black dustbins full of garden rubbish from residents’ properties and dump it between the eucalyptus trees behind properties in the open space before the Meredale dumping site.

In Ormonde View residents are dumping in the open spaces and servitudes of Rand Water and Prasa situated between the suburb and Aeroton.

In Kibler Park, illegal dumping along Gordon Road on private properties is a serious problem as Pikitup will not clear dumping from these sites.

In previous press articles, Stewart explained that residents doing alterations to their properties should apply for a hoarding licence and obtain skip bins to discard their excess building rubble and garden rubble to be taken to the Meredale, Mayfield Park or Mondeor sites.

“The illegal dumping is not only causing a serious environmental hazard but also reflects badly on us as a society in the pride and respect we hold for our areas and the value of the properties in the area. Illegal dumping can be reported to 082 779 1361, even better if photos of these culprits can be forwarded,” said Stewart.
