Eye of Africa appoints new golf director

His experience also includes co-ordinating events like the SA Open and the Alfred Dunhill Championships.

EYE of Africa Golf and Residential Estate is pleased to welcome Hein Papenfus as its new director of golf.

Papenfus has over two decades’ experience in the golfing and hospitality industry. This includes stints at such acclaimed courses as Ebotse, Houghton and the Johannesburg Country Club, where he excelled in building and nurturing corporate partnerships – a skill he says he plans to bring to Eye of Africa. His experience also includes co-ordinating events like the SA Open and the Alfred Dunhill Championships.

His passion for sport began as a young boy; however, he took up golf only during his twenties after being introduced to the sport by friends. The game has been a central part of his life ever since.

Papenfus’ golfing career began in 1992, when he took a job at the Pro Shop at Randfontein Golf Club. The post provided valuable lessons which helped him to understand all aspects of the golfing experience – from the hospitality element at the club, to the green-keeping of the course.

NEW DIRECTOR: Hein Papenfus has big plans for Eye of Africa, the only Greg Norman signature-designed golf course in South Africa

Papenfus has big plans for the only Greg Norman signature-designed golf course in South Africa which is the current host of the PGA Championships as well as one of the most prestigious tournaments on the Sunshine Tour. He is looking forward to polishing up the entire golf experience for players at the upmarket lifestyle estate, located in Johannesburg’s southern suburbs.

“Our goal is to provide a five-star experience that is not easily matched,” he promises. He adds that the facilities, space and environment at the Eye of Africa’s course make it ideal for hosting large-scale international tournaments. He points to factors such as the positioning of the halfway stop which make the course unique: players play the first nine holes out, have their ‘stop over’ on course and continue the game from there.

“It is a course unlike any other in South Africa – one of the best I have seen during my career. There’s no doubt that this is a championship golf course,” Papenfus said. His personal aim is clear: to see it take its place among the country’s top 20.
