WATCH: Vanessa turns 50 at the UCPA

The staff and other residents were glad to be a part of the joyous occasion as it’s not often that a fiftieth birthday is celebrated at the UCPA.

VANESSA Barkhuizen celebrated her 50th birthday at the United Cerebral Palsy Association (UCPA), in Townsview, on April 21.

WATCH:

Vanessa was born with cerebral palsy and her mother signed consent for adoption at birth and she was then placed in the care of the UCPA by a welfare society, in 1977.

TEAM: The UCPA team of nurses and caregivers with Vanessa Barkhuizen, who turned 50.

Vanessa is wheelchair bound and is totally dependent in all areas of her daily living. The pleasant soul loves listening to music and loved it when everyone sang to her on her birthday.

TREATS: Birthday cake and cupcakes at Vanessa Barkhuizen’s 50th birthday party.

She also enjoys colouring-in and conversing with other residents and the staff. Due to spasticity, she cannot be involved in other activities.

FAMILY: Kedibone Mabea, Dorothy Onugha, Zodwa Moyo, Claudia Mokhachane, Thabitha Dube and Nalini Bailey stand around Vanessa Barkhuizen.

Vanessa had her own birthday cake and cupcakes and loved every minute of her party. She smiled pleasantly for all the photos and enjoyed the singing that filled the room.

CELEBRATE: Blandine Vambi, Ayabonga Jodo and Zodwa Moyo.

The staff and other residents were also glad to be a part of the joyous occasion as it’s not often that a 50th birthday is celebrated at the UCPA.

HAPPY: Adele Kemp, Vanessa Barkhuizen and Debbie Smith.

The UCPA is urging businesses and individuals to adopt or sponsor a child per month. It costs about R7 500 per month to care for one patient. Every month the UCPA is faced with operating shortfalls and, therefore, relies on public support. Adopting or sponsoring a child will impact greatly on both the child’s life and that of their sponsor and the UCPA would love for sponsors to meet the child that they choose to sponsor or adopt.

SINGING: All the nurses at the UCPA singing for Vanessa.

If you would like to donate to the UCPA, the banking details are: Standard Bank, The Glen, branch code 006 005 and account number 002 864 088.

All cheques to be made payable to the United Cerebral Palsy Association of South Africa.
