Making desert roses from sugar

In the end, everyone seemed to have fun and each edible rose had a unique beauty – just like real flowers.

JUST under 40 people attended the ‘desert rose’ workshop that the South African Cake Decorator’s Guild hosted at NG Kerk Verwoerdpark on Tuesday, April 4.

This Guild, the Gladiola Botha branch, hosts monthly gatherings at the church on the first Tuesday of every month. The gatherings vary between demonstrations (which members only observe) and practical workshops (in which members participate). At this gathering Sue Reid, National President of the Guild, showed everyone how to make a desert rose out of sugar paste.

Before the workshop started, everyone enjoyed a cup of tea or coffee and a variety of delicious snacks – of course there was cake, too. Deon Swarts (deputy of the Guild, also known as the “Cake Genie”) brought along a few of his artful cakes to display to everyone. It was just the kick of inspiration that everyone needed to make their own sugar desert rose.

EDIBLE: This is not a real plant – everything is made from sugar. Amazing!

As Sue demonstrated how to make the petals, she and a few colleagues watched over everyone in case they needed help. Everyone seemed determined to make the most beautiful rose. In the end, everyone seemed to have fun and each edible rose had a unique beauty – just like real flowers.

DELICATE WORK: Each desert rose petal is made with care before the cactus is assembled.

Next month’s gathering will be a demonstration of buttercream icing techniques by Suzie Balicki. Feel free to attend it for only R20. If you are interested in becoming a permanent member of the Gladiola Botha branch, please contact Fernanda de Gouveia on 082 477 7142.

The South African Cake Decorators Guild will also hold a cake show from July 28 to 30 at the upcoming Good Food and Wine Show at the Ticketpro Dome. The competition is open to members, chefs and the public. If you would like to enter, contact Karen Watts on 011 969 6566 / 011 968 1204 or send an email to karenwatts@telkomsa.net. Entries cost R50 each and the closing date for entries is May 30.
