Officers reject bribe and arrest four

The JMPD officers rejected the bribe and during the search discovered two bags containing two illegal firearms, ammunition, laptop computers, cellphones and other electrical accessories.

DURING a routine stop-and-search operation by Johannesburg Metro Police officers, four armed robbers were arrested around 14:00 on January 22 near Doornfontein.

According to media specialist at the private office of the executive mayor, Tanya Heydenrych, the stop-and-searches are randomly done whenever and wherever required. Officers often identify suspected persons or vehicles and then conduct a stop-and-search.

“When JMPD officers stopped this specific white Ford Territory, the four male occupants attempted to bribe their way out of the search. The driver attempted to bribe the four officers with a R100 note,” said Heydenrych.

The JMPD officers rejected the bribe and during the search discovered two bags containing two illegal firearms, ammunition, laptop computers, cellphones and other electrical accessories.

On further investigation, it was discovered that the suspects had robbed an electronics chain store in Heidelberg earlier in the day.

MMC for Public Safety Councillor Michael Sun commended the JMPD officers for their quick reactions and for standing firm against corruption.

“It is because of their integrity and professionalism that there are now four less armed and dangerous criminals within our City. The suspects were later taken to Jeppe Police Station, where they were charged for armed robbery as well as for possession of stolen goods, illegal firearm and ammunition,” said Sun.
