Church starts music school

Principal of the school Shereda Fareell said she is a custodian for a short while.

CHILDREN and parents from the South gathered at New Apostolic Church, Towerby during the launch of Maketse Music School on Saturday, February 4.

Maketse means ‘be astonished’ in Sesotho, and it is a music initiative by the South Rand District of the New Apostolic Church in Johannesburg. It aims to fire up imaginations while creating excitement, joy, and fun for children and adults alike.

Principal of the school Shereda Fareell said she is a custodian for a short while, however, she wants the children to learn how to play certain instruments. “They need to inspire others and this is our way of giving back to the community. We are very excited about this initiative and we ultimately want to have an orchestra which will be ready to stage a show in December 2018,” she said.

Bradley Borne, a member of the church, said the music school is open to every child in the South, not only to the members of church. “This initiative will bring the children together and it will help them at school to concentrate, as they will be taught discipline and social coherence. We invite them to come on Saturdays to learn how to play different instruments,” he said.

Maketse Music School will teach, among other things, the flute, clarinet, violin, viola, cello, double bass, brass, how to use a voice recorder and how to do conducting.

To join, come to the church at the corner of Hillen and Wilcox streets, Towerby or visit their Facebook page: facebook.com/maketse.
