The 2016 Gauteng Diwali Festival promises to be bigger and better

THE Gauteng Diwali Festival hosted by the South African Hindu Maha Sabha (SAHMS) in conjunction with Gold Reef City and the Post Newspaper, will be taking place at Gold Reef City on Saturday, October 15. Regarded as one of the largest events on Gauteng’s cultural calendar, the Gauteng Diwali Festival is not only enjoyed in Durban, but also in Cape Town and Gauteng respectively. This allows the South African Hindu Maha Sabha (SAHMS) to expand the reach of Diwali celebrations across the country.

Having enjoyed continuous success and a great following over the years, the 2016 edition of the Gauteng Diwali Festival promises to be even bigger and better than previous years. This year’s programme is tailored to appeal to the whole family, with a host of exciting artists lined up, including superstars from various dance groups, solo singers and a few surprise artists.

“The festival will officially kick off with a hawan ceremony (prayer offering into a fire) at 09:00, followed by a multitude of entertainment acts performed against the backdrop of a variety of shopping experiences offered by exhibitors,” said Gareth Kaschula, Gold Reef City’s Marketing Manager.

“Gold Reef City is delighted to co-host the 2016 Gauteng Diwali Festival and we hope this spectacular celebration of light brings joy to all our guests,” he said.

There will be over 40 stalls at the festival, and they will be open from early morning until the evening. These stalls will house a selection of food, clothing and accessories, religious goods and various other items. And whilst you might think a show of this calibre will cost you, SAHMS have ensured that entrance is free.

“The 2016 festival promises to be a showcase of colour, fun, music, dance and even a variety of different culinary experiences. We have noted the feedback received from some of our patrons in the past and have made some minor adjustments to the festival this year. There will also be several competitions being run throughout the day with amazing prizes to be won.” said Avish Kalicharan, festival co-ordinator.

As always, a spectacular aerial fireworks display (no bangs, light displays only) will light up the Gauteng night sky, closing off a Saturday never to be forgotten. This will be accompanied by a high-energy musical extravaganza featuring some well-known artists rendering a wide variety of musical performances. It will culminate in a Fusion Bhangra party brought to you by the ever-popular Lotus FM for everyone to dance the night away.
