Hospital raises awareness of deafness

A speech therapist and audiologist from Netcare Mulbarton set up a table to raise awareness of deafness.

AS we commemorate Hearing Awareness Month this September, speech therapist and audiologist, Samantha Medhurst from Netcare Mulbarton set up a table at the hospital on Monday, September 5, to raise awareness of deafness.

The open day saw posters erected with free screenings being done. Samantha together with Nadine Botha (Hearcare Bergbron), held discussions on hearing, hearing awareness and helped educate people on how to take care of their hearing or notice hearing loss.

According to the South African Hearing Institute’s hearing loss statistics, it is estimated that in sub-Saharan countries, more than 1.2-million children aged between five and 14 years suffer from moderate to severe hearing loss in both ears. In South Africa about 7.5 per cent of schoolchildren suffer from varying degrees of hearing loss.
