Spring gardening with the garden club

JOHANNESBURG South Garden Club enjoyed a talk by guest speaker Dave Wilmot, on Tuesday, August 30, at the Entrance Precinct, Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve, Kibler Park.
Dave shared his tips on planting succulents and how well they do in drought conditions with club members.
“It seems very likely we’ll be experiencing drought conditions again this summer and, as gardeners, we need to know what we can and can’t plant,” he said.
”You’ll find that anything with grey leaves will grow well in drought conditions, so when choosing plants look for these.
“We need to change our whole outlook on gardening when water is scarce, and there are many succulents on the market now which are ideal for drought conditions,” added Dave.
He showed the members cuttings of various succulents and plants which grow well with little watering, and advised members to use mushroom compost in their gardens.
Diane du Plessis, who owns a company called, Six (6) Degrees East, gave a talk after Dave.
Her company makes gardening aprons which will make a fantastic gift for all gardeners who enjoy pottering in their gardens. They won’t have to keep going to and from their garage or shed to get secateurs or trowels, as the aprons have pockets for everything. They are made from the local ShweShwe material or denim and are reversible and fully lined (not the denim ones).
There’s also a clip for a hand towel, a large pocket for seeds, gloves, harvested vegetables etc.
The informative morning finished with refreshments served in the garden of the Entrance Precinct.
