Lesego sets her sights on title

"I may not know all the facts, but one thing I am sure of, is that a life worth living is one in which you dare to do the unthinkable, do it, and do it again, and again." - Lesego Seloane

LESEGO Seloane (25) is a passionate young woman who has made it to the regional finals of the Miss Earth South Africa (MESA) pageant.

Residing in Meredale, in the South of Johannesburg, the beauty is already a proud and humble owner of a landscaping company, Ronewa Creations, and an image consultancy company, Ditshwantsho Image Defined.

She holds a degree in biochemistry and botany from the University of Johannesburg (UJ) and a qualification in landscape and design from Lifestyle College.

Lesego is excited yet nervous about the journey ahead, having taken part in pageants from a young age, she has always wanted to do this but she had to shelve this part of her life to focus on completing her studies. Upon completion, when the opportunity arose, she was thrilled to still meet the requirements and went for it.

“MESA is more than just a pageant, but an influential platform which incorporates my love for nature and pageantry,” said the finalist.

Growing up in Kagiso, Lesego attended Krugersdorp Town School and matriculated from Hoërskool Jan De Klerk in 2008.

She truly embodies the saying, beauty with a purpose, as she works tirelessly towards becoming one of SA’s change agents. Lesego believes everyone can be a part of this journey, not just the “hippies or tree huggers”. Her interest in the Miss Earth pageant began after meeting Miss Earth South Africa 2013, Ashanti Mbanga in 2013.

“All you need to do is love your surroundings and prove that by taking care of the environment,” she said. Lesego resides with her parents Ramotse and Alettah Seloane who she said are her pillars of strength.

Lesego is using every part of the MESA journey as a teachable moment, exposing herself to a network of inspiring young women from different backgrounds, who too, seek to make a difference. The bigger picture is to collectively use her passions in creatively implementing green solutions in her community and impacting and inspiring the country at large through sustainable environmental activism.

The eldest of four sisters said winning MESA would be a dream come true for her. Leadership is at the forefront of what she stands for, with a passion for nature, artistry, entrepreneurship and the youth of our country, she is on a journey to make a meaningful contribution in her areas of interest.

Having had the honour of being announced Most Versatile Student in her high school career, Lesego has taken it in her stride to not become one-dimensional but truly embrace her versatility. This has paved a way for the organisations she have been instrumentally involved with over the years.

The finalists are all hosting their Mandela Day initiatives building up to the finals which will be held in September.

The God-fearing and family orientated finalist enjoys scrapbooking and singing and simply “chilling with friends”.

“I am a daring woman who takes all challenges and makes the best out of life. I will work at it until it is a success and I never give up,” she said.

Here are some of Lesego’s highlights:

  • Chairperson – University of Johannesburg Music Society (2013-2014). This was a great chance to work with young people who are also passionate about artistry in the form of music.
  • Head of events management – Soweto Arts (2015-current).
  • Head of events management – The Good Fridays (2016). Both events based in Soweto, promoting young artists and film-makers respectively.
  • Children’s Church teacher – Grace Bible Church (2010-2016). Leading lessons with children, to teach them the Word and give them enough insight to lead bold, impactful lives.
  • Designer – The Grand Design Show (Complex Gardens) (2016). Tasked with the installation of a garden and to upsize (reuse) recyclable materials to create the garden.
