The time is now to be part of the Schools SleepOut

SCHOOLS across South Africa have been challenged once again to take part in this year’s SchoolSleepOut in an effort to gain empathy for vulnerable communities or schools.

This is an opportunity for various schools in the country to be part of the biggest philanthropic event in the country.

The call for schools to participate is encouraging. To date, 12 schools have signed up on the CEO SleepOut website. The event is now in its second year, and schools across the country can rise to the challenge and demonstrate their commitment by sleeping out on July 28.

Learners, teachers and parents from schools such Alpha Primary School, Pridwin, St Peter’s School Mbombela, Alpha and Omega Christian Academy, Beaulieu College (division of Kyalami schools), Beaulieu Preparatory, Eunice Girls School, Maureensa, Shangri-La Academy, Kingsmead College, Pretoria Chinese School and St Andrews School for Girls have all responded to the call aimed at experiencing empathy, understanding and compassion.

The 2016 School SleepOut challenges more learners, teachers and parents at public and private schools to sleep out to support a worthy cause of their own.

To help raise awareness of the School SleepOut, Jesse Sim a pupil at Redham House Bedfordview, Mpho Motjuwadi from Crawford College Lonehill and Shane Bassin from King David Linksfield are among the 22 learners and students who have been elected as some of the project’s brand ambassadors.

As part of the initiative, participants in the Schools SleepOut must identify an outreach school in need, learn about the items they need most, from food and books to clothes and stationery, and commit to gathering and delivering those items, making a difference to those in need.

Liberty embraces the opportunity to support The Sun International School SleepOut because it raises awareness of the thousands of children who are homeless and vulnerable, compelled to sleep on the streets of South Africa. In addition to rallying the call to schools to register for The School SleepOut, Liberty has also partnered with Kingsmead College to host six Johannesburg-based schools in a joint School SleepOut. Liberty will be providing logistical support on the night in the form of medical standby facilities, catering and items that make up a SleepOut kit. Everything loaned to the pupils and teachers sleeping out on the grounds of Kingsmead on the night will be donated, after the event, to a beneficiary that supports homeless South Africans.
