Freedom Day at Lusito Land

Hosted by the Lusito Association for the Mentally and Physically Challenged, the festival kicked off on April 22 at Wemmer Pan

THOUSANDS of people spent Freedom Day (Wednesday, April 27) dancing the day away to good music.

Being one of Joburg’s biggest festivals, Lusito Land proved to be a great success and it was all for a good cause. Hosted by the Lusito Association for the Mentally and Physically Challenged, the festival kicked off on April 22 at Wemmer Pan, Turf Road, La Rochelle and ended on May 2.

According to chairman of the Lusito Association, Sergio Aquino, Lusito Land first opened its doors in 1981 and over the last 35 years has evolved from a one day event to an 11 day festival that welcomes over 100 000 people. “The planning for Lusito began 10 months ago and costs the school R5.5 million to put together. Last year was a great success and we are hoping to do better this year,” said Aquino.

The well known Mi Casa pumped up Lusito Land with their old and new singles. The band, which consists of three members, Dr. Duda (producer and pianist), J’Something (vocalist and guitarist), and Mo-T (trumpeter) got Lusito Land dancing the night away to the sound of good local music.
