Minister discourages driving school corruption

The minister speaks after announcing the arrests of traffic officers who allegedly solicited bribes.

DRIVER learning centres, also known as driving schools, have gained a bad reputation for corruption and bribes, as some learner drivers and the media have exposed the existence of bribes being taken.

Minister of Transport, Dipuo Peters, took some time to discourage this corruption after announcing the arrests of two traffic officials on allegations of soliciting bribes on the roads during the Easter holidays while she was announcing the Easter accidents stats on Tuesday, March 29 in Pretoria.

She made it clear that the media, and in particular the SABC, played a vital role in exposing this unwanted corruption in these driver learning centres. “Now it is time to act and see convictions. I would like to see the convictions of these corrupt officials at provincial level and municipal level. We now have to close the loop and cut down on these illegal activities within our system,” said the minister.
