The Bag Lady

At the change of the season and as autumn nears, I’m loving the colour mustard/gold.

I was at the opening of H&M on Saturday, March 19, at Mall of the South, and there was quite a hype and lots of excitement as customers queued from 06:00 to gain entry when the store officially opened its doors at 11:00. Apart from being a store with a great variety of clothing and accessories for all ages, from new-born to the more mature shopper, they have an amazing policy: Give Forward By Bringing Back.

H&M promises to reuse and recycle old clothing, to give it a new life, and with their garment collecting initiative it’s a win-win situation. Bring your old clothes and home textiles from any brand in any condition and you will receive one voucher for 15 per cent discount (South Africa) for each bag you hand in, with a maximum of two vouchers per day (vouchers redeemable on your next purchase). Does H&M profit from returned garments? No. Their revenues will be used to reward their customers, to make donations to local charity organisations and to invest in recycling innovation.

Long-term, H&M wants to reduce the environmental impact of garments throughout the life cycle and create a closed loop for textile fibres. The aim is to find technical solutions to reuse and recycle textile fibres on a larger scale, which is why H&M has set up its Conscious Foundation: to support innovation on closing the loop on textiles and social projects along H&M’s value chain.

A “must” have

At the change of the season and as autumn nears, I’m loving the colour mustard/gold. Choose throws or cushions to warm up the look of your lounge, fluffy towels to brighten your bathroom (I’m still looking for the shade I want), and beautiful linen which will give your bedroom a golden glow. Thanks for the symbolism of the Simnel Cake

Elizabeth, a reader of The Bag Lady, says: “Nice to see the recipe for a Simnel cake in the newspaper but sad that the symbolism of the 11 marzipan balls is not explained. Although the cake in the picture looks good, the balls should not be placed evenly spaced. They should be placed so that there is an empty space the size of one ball to symbolise Judas. The other 11 balls symbolise the apostles who were loyal to Jesus. May you and your loved ones enjoy a blessed Easter.”

Bouquet of the Week

Jean Hattingh from Mothwa Haven Rewlatch gives a big bouquet to Mark Hill from Son Security and Property Management. “Mark went out of his way to repair the electric wiring which surrounds Mothwa Haven and even went so far as to fix the barbed wire which had been cut. He also replaced the energiser for the electric fence. Thank you so much Mark. We at Mothwa Haven all appreciate your generosity and kindness.”

That’s it for this week. Shop till you drop.
