Celebrating World Helmet Day

"We are pleading with parents to ensure that children have helmets if they have bicycles"

AS the world celebrated World Helmet Day, Mulbarton Hospital rallied around Cuddles Inn Two Nursery to educate the children on the importance of wearing helmets and knowing what to do in the event of an emergency.

Preshcilla Sigamony, unit manager of the casualty and emergency department at Mulbarton Hospital, said the staff is involved in this initiative because during this time of year there is an increase in the number of head injuries that could easily be prevented if children wore helmets.

“We aim to teach children how to correctly wear helmets and this initiative will see the Netcare paramedics go to various schools and shopping centres to promote helmet usage. We are pleading with parents to ensure that children have helmets if they have bicycles,” she said.

Netcare911 paramedics who were also at Cuddles Inn Two Nursery demonstrated the basic procedure of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to the children so they know what to do in the case of an emergency.

Teachers at Cuddles Inn Two Nursery were more than delighted to welcome staff from Mulbarton Hospital and the Netcare911 paramedics. One of the educators, Cindy-Lee Liebenberg, said it is important for the children to be taught the basic safety and medical procedures in an entertaining way as Mulbarton Hospital did.

Angie Badenhorst is another educator who thanked Netcare911 for the interest it showed in educating the children. “The hospital staff put together an animated presentation which was so enjoyable for the children and we are truly thankful that they invest their time and effort in the children,” she said.

The hospital staff handed out Easter eggs, crayons and colouring pages attached to a pamphlet that educated children and their parents on the basic use of helmets and car seats.
