BMW Blue Hornet to lead Gandhi Walk

Privileged to be able to bring the BMW Eco Team Pro to the 2016 Gandhi Walk.

GANDHI walkers can expect something totally different to join them on the 6km route this year.

The greenest vehicle on the African continent, powered solely by the sun, will be at the start-line of the 31st annual Gandhi Walk and Fun Run, which takes place on Sunday, April 17, starting and finishing at Gandhi Hall, Impala Crescent Extension Five, Lenasia.

The Gandhi Walk committee and Carlook’s Shabir Satar feel privileged to be able to bring the BMW Eco Team Pro to the 2016 event.

They are getting into high gear, with just a few weeks to go before they host the biggest walking event south of Joburg, as well as the inaugural Lenasia 12km Fun Run, which will honour Ahmed “Kathy” Kathrada, an icon of humane integrity. They are all inspired by his legacy and dedication to achieve freedom for all people.

Science, technology and engineering all came together where dynamic students from the University of Johannesburg (UJ) formed part of the team that won the Shell Eco Marathon Challenge. They are now the first Southern African team to be selected for the International Eco Marathon Challenge 2016, being held in London later this year.

Project manager and primary driver, Muhammad Moolla, says the car – built from scratch – achieved an astonishing result of 343.8 km/kWh, allowing the BMW Eco Team Pro to be crowned the winners of the battery electric prototype category. The BMW Blue Hornet is capable of travelling a distance of 343.8 km on just R1 of electricity.

The BMW Blue Hornet is now the most efficient electric vehicle on the African continent and one of the Top 10 most efficient electric vehicles globally.

Race engineer and team leader, Khizar Sultan will also be on hand at the Gandhi Walk to provide the driver with vital information and technical data throughout the Gandhi Walk, to ensure an efficient drive on the day.

Gandhi Walk chairman Amit Parbhucharan invites members of the community and especially aspiring youngsters to participate in the Gandhi Walk, to see the car and rally support for the young UJ engineers vying to bring the spotlight to Africa.

Diarise April 17, to join the thousands of people who are expected to flock to Gandhi Hall to enjoy the fun walks, fun run and the day’s festivities.
