No help with new sinkhole

Yet another new sinkhole is developing in Khutsong in an area where there was previously a sewage leak.

Khutsong residents are concerned about the lack of support from the municipality regarding a new sinkhole that has caved in near their houses. According to one of them, Mr Lazarus Modibe, sewage leaked into the veld next to house No. 4724 in the first week of January.

“Our drains were stuck, and sewage water was damming up here,” says Modibe.

He adds that the sewage only subsided after the municipality came and fixed the problem. However, Modibe noticed the sinkhole while preparing for his mother’s funeral shortly afterwards. Besides the new sinkhole being near Mbulelo and Nayaboswa primary schools, it is situated less than 20 metres from the main Rand Water pipeline that supplies water to the whole of Khutsong. Although the new sinkhole is still not very big, residents say they immediately reported it as there could be huge problems if it should cave in further.

“I called the ward councillor and begged her to come and look, but she never came,” one of the residents complains.

Although the Herald asked the municipality for feedback, they did not respond.

The new sinkhole is sagging in where there was a sewage leak near Mbulelo Primary School earlier this year.
