Stay safe this festive season

Residents should be more alert than ever, as roads in the area are expected to be much busier than usual this festive season.

“The Gauteng Traffic Police (GTP) urge road users to be vigilant and drive with caution as many holidaymakers make their way to their various holiday destinations. Numerous roads are expected to experience high traffic congestion, starting this week and going into 25 December, on Christmas Day,” said Mr Sello Maremane of GTP on 14 December. He said the N12 between Johannesburg and Potchefstroom, running through our area, will be one of the seven busiest roads in the province over the festive season.

The others are the N1 from Pretoria to Polokwane and from Johannesburg to Bloemfontein, the N4 from Pretoria to Rustenburg and Emalahleni (Witbank), the N12 from Johannesburg to Emalahleni, the N3 from Johannesburg to Durban and the R573 Pretoria Moloto Road.
Maremane reiterated that the Gauteng Traffic Police would be on high alert in response to any unlawful behaviour on the roads.

The Herald asked the Merafong City Local Municipality how they would ensure road safety in the area this festive season.

“The municipality has a joint festive season plan with Gauteng Traffic and the SAPS, involving several roadblocks. The municipality is also busy re-opening the vehicle testing station and hopes it will be operational soon,” said the acting marketing and communications manager, Ms Nomonde Mahube.

“As the festive season approaches, it is important to prioritise your health and well-being and we have to be prepared for unforeseen medical emergencies,” advises the Gauteng Emergency Services (EMS) district manager in the West Rand, Mr Jurgens Bence. He advises residents to save the contact numbers for Gauteng EMS on their phones, as this could make a significant difference in critical situations. In case of medical emergencies that require an ambulance service, dial 112 from your cell phone or call Gauteng EMS’s direct number 011 564 2210/1.

Bence predicted that alcohol consumption would rise during the festive season, but strongly advised readers not to drink and drive.

Additionally, with the warmer temperatures, more people may engage in water activities. To ensure water safety, go in a group, stay together, and conduct regular roll calls. Never approach water alone or swim alone.

Avoid swimming under the influence of alcohol or while intoxicated. Always swim near a lifeguard, alert authorities immediately if someone is in distress, and maintain visual contact.

“If you should be involved in a vehicle accident, stay calm and move away from the road surface if safe. Call emergency medical services, speaking clearly and slowly. Provide specific details about the accident location, like road name, area, town, nearest crossing, or landmarks. Share incident details and the number of people involved. Provide a contact number for someone living at the scene.

“This festive season, let’s celebrate responsibly by staying informed and prepared for any medical emergencies. Ensuring a healthy and happy holiday season for all is our collective responsibility. Stay safe and enjoy the festivities responsibly!” Bence concluded.
