Fochville farm owner killed by nyala

A nyala antelope killed a 36-year-old farm owner in a freak accident on his farm between Fochville and Potchefstroom on Thursday, 24 August.

The nyala bull attacked Renier Pieterse, the owner of the farm Boschhoek, while he was taking the animal back to its camp after it had jumped a fence. He was rushed towards Potchefstroom for medical help, and emergency medical personnel met him on the N12 halfway between his farm and Potchefstroom.
Although they tried to resuscitate Pieterse, they were unsuccessful.
The Fochville SAPS station commissioner, Lt. Col. Kgomotso Netshitangani, confirmed that the police had opened an inquest.
According to our sister newspaper, Potchefstroom Herald, Pieterse, who owned a business in Potchefstroom but came from Vanderbilpark, leaves behind his wife, Marieke, and sons Luhan (8) and Dian (6).
His funeral will be in the NG Kerk Vaalrivier in Vanderbiljpark on Friday, 1 September.
