Three taxi killings in three days

The ongoing violence in the minibus taxi industry in the Carletonville area reached a new low this week when three separate incidents occurred in just three days.

The first shooting occurred on Monday, 14 August.
A taxi driver, Mr Phineas Masedi (55), and his colleague, Mr Clifford Mokgaswana (63), were sitting in a minibus taxi at the corner of Diamond and Emerald streets in Carletonville at approximately 15:25. The taxi belonged to a member of the Carletonville United Taxi Association (Cuta).
Suddenly two young men came walking towards them.
They pulled out firearms and shot the taxi driver and his colleague.
Masedi died at the scene, while Mokgaswana was shot in his right arm.
Bystanders called for help, and he was rushed to Carletonville Hospital.
The Carletonville police are investigating murder and attempted murder cases following the incident.
Another shooting happened on Wednesday, 16 August.
A driver of the Carletonville Local And Long Distance Taxi Association (CALLDTA), Mr Mkunyane Joseph Kantse (47), was sitting in his minibus taxi at the Carletonville Taxi Rank at approximately 19:15.
Suddenly, an unknown gunman approached and started shooting at the taxi with a 9 mm pistol. He hit Kantse several times, and he died at the scene.
A passenger was also hit but was taken to Carletonville Hospital.
As far as could be determined, police had just rushed to this scene when yet another taxi shooting occurred, this time in Khutsong Extension 5 near Welverdiend at approximately 20:00.
The taxi was parked near the Smart Shopper spaza shop when a VW Polo drove up to them.
The assailants in the vehicle started firing at the taxi with a heavy calibre gun.
They hit the vehicle 28 times, and the driver, Mr Carlos Shilenge (32), was fatally wounded. His passenger, Mr Zithu Zungu (29), was also hit in his back and was taken to Carletonville Hospital. The police’s taxi violence unit is investigating all the cases.
