Watch out for scamsters

The municipality says homeowners only need an electrical certificate of compliance (COC) when buying, selling or extending their house.

On Tuesday, a Carletonville homeowner complained on social media that someone claiming to be from the municipality called him and threatened to cut off his electricity if he did get a new electrical certificate of compliance every five years.
“When I asked for his details, name and where he was calling from, he put down the phone. We called back, and he picked up but hung up again when we explained what we were calling about,” the resident complained.
The Herald contacted the Merafong City Local Municipality for more clarity on when this type of document was needed on Tuesday.
“Before any new house connects to the network, it needs a COC. A COC is only necessary when extending or selling a house. The assertion that homeowners must get a COC every five years is not true,” the municipality answered.
