Spartans excel at Nationals

Members of the Spartans Karate Club recently excelled at this sport's national championship and other big competitions.

According to the club’s spokesperson Martin Venter, the star Spartans travelled to the Fairview Sports Centre in Gqeberha (formerly known as Port Elizabeth) for the KSA u.21, Seniors, Veterans and Masters National Championship. This competition, where the best fighters from all over the country compete for places, took place from 3 to 5 March.
Roshan Singh won bronze in the u.21 male kumite (fighting) division. Samantha Maré won bronze for kumite and was placed in the top 20 for kata (forms) in the female senior division.
Mari Maré passed the judges course and exam for kumite.
Sensei Enzo Pillay also became an accredited coach for the 10th consecutive year after passing the examinations for kata and kumite.
Members of the club then travelled to the Old Mutual Sports Centre in Durban for the KSA Children, Cadets and Junior National Championships from 16 to 18 March. The fighters who proceeded to this event competed against the top four fighters from each province. Rochelle Seitz won silver in the 12 to 13 years girls’ kumite division, while Aiden Arendse won bronze for kumite and placed ninth for kata in the 14 to 15 years cadet boys divisions. Kyle Kannemeyer placed fifth in the 12 to 13 years boys’ division for kumite, and Jordan Naryan got fifth in the 10 to 11 years boys’ kumite division.
“All the competitors who participated in the events earned their Gauteng colours, which will be issued by the Gauteng Sports Confederation.
“Spartans are also proud to announce that four of their competitors were announced as part of the KSA National Squad.
“The competitions were a follow-up from the Gauteng qualifier in February 2023, and Sensei Enzo said he was extremely proud of all the hard work the athletes put in.
“They can be proud of themselves as they have found their place among the country’s best competitors. They will soon be dominating the WKF scene.
“Join the Spartans as they prepare to take on South Africa once again at the upcoming 2023 KSA League 1 championship,” Venter added.
