House robbers kill former councillor

Robbers shoot friends relaxing in Carletonville yard.

The increasing number of house robberies in our area claimed the life of a former ward councillor of the Merafong City Local Municipality this week.
As far as could be determined, the late Mr Andries Malibe (42) and friends were enjoying a few drinks in the front yard of a house on Iridium Street on Wednesday, 21 February. The gate was not locked.

At approximately 19:30, two unknown Sotho-speaking men walked into the yard. They pulled out firearms and, without warning, started shooting at Malibe and his friends.

They shot Malibe multiple times and one of his friends (44) once in the back.

They hit another (46) in the knee and left foot.

The gunmen then ran away.

Sadly, Malibe died at the scene. The ambulance transported the wounded to Carletonville Hospital.

Authorities suspect the attackers may have been searching for someone else when the incident occurred. Malibe was the ANC ward councillor for Ward 9 from 2016 to 2021.

“This is painful. He was humble, friendly and a lovely person who always smiled,” one of Malibe’s former colleagues described him.

Malibe will be buried on Saturday.

Another house robbery occurred in Carletonville on the same day.

A woman (45) from Dahlia Street was asleep in bed in the early hours of 21 February.

She woke up to find a man masked with a balaclava in her room at about 01:40. The robber, who spoke English, threatened her with a knife and demanded the password to her phone.

He then grabbed her device and laptop before ransacking the rest of the house, looking for valuables. He then ran away.

Luckily, the woman was uninjured.
