New paving already sagging

Brand new paving that municipal contractors installed towards the end of last year in Kokosi at Fochville is already coming apart.

Kokosi residents complained for years that there was no place for pedestrians to walk safely on the side of A. Lembede Drive, the town’s main ring road. It was especially problematic at the bridge over the Loopspruit.

Last year, flooding damaged the entire bridge, and the municipality appointed a contractor to repair it. Contractors also paved a path for pedestrians next to the road. The work continued up to the festive season.
Recently, however, observant residents started noticing that the paving on the sidewalk had sagged where it joins the side of the bridge. The paving is also pulling apart in places.

“The municipality must come and fix this. They cannot just leave it like this. We asked them to rebuild the bridge, but they only patched things over,” a resident walking over on Friday complained.

Numerous other pedestrians also complained that the paving had not been done well.

The Herald took the issue to the municipality on Tuesday.

“The project is incomplete; the contractor must still do more work. Practical completion of the inspection will commence as soon as the contractor completes the outstanding items,” responded the municipal marketing and communication manager, Mr Temba Fezani.
