New electricity meters for bigger users

The new automated meter reading system will also allow higher electricity users to check and manage their electricity consumption online.

Bigger businesses and consumers will soon get new meters to measure their electricity consumption.

The municipal council made this decision during its meeting on 28 September.

The new automated meter reading system allows higher electricity users to check and manage their electricity consumption online.

The Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) is funding the project to assist the municipality in improving its income.

The same system Merafong is implementing has been used successfully at the Emfuleni Local Municipality for years.

Merafong’s sales to higher power users are at 21 per cent, the lowest for this crucial segment in Gauteng.

The municipality with the closest sales percentage to higher users, our neighbour, Rand West City, sells 41 per cent of its electricity to such consumers. Elsewhere in the West Rand, Mogale City sells 55 per cent of its electricity to these higher users.
